Never tried for one but big meaty flies. I hear a lot on big bass flies. Crayfish and chub size patterns.

Inot found out have caught them on a fly rod using a red worm and a red bead. I have watched some other fishermen using just flies successfully. I havehh not found out what flies they are using but some of the bowfin they caught were large. Bowfin put up a good fight on a fly rod and very good places to fish for them are almost in my back yard. The trout fishig locally is not very good so I fish for warmwater fish with a fly rod.

Not really a big trout fisherman myself. Never targeted bowfin got some waters around me with them in it. Hear they fight great.

You need to address this with GremCat. He uses live minnows for almost anything and he often does it in a flyrod.
