Cleaning Seminar

Tonight is a milestone evening with the grandchildren. I bought three Johnson 225’s that are good but need cleaning. The three grandkids involved are all 9 and are fishing buddies. I’ll not take them into the drags at this point but I’ll instead keep it pretty simple and limit it to more or less wiping out and lubricating them. It’s the first time for them to be inside a reel. Then we will probably load them with line and place them on old pistol grip rods. The idea is to get them to learn better or handed casting.

At the end one of the Fathers will engage them in knot tying. The goal for tonight will be to learn the improved clinch knot using combo wrenches and parachute chord.

We will keep this brief and stick to the basics.

It is refreshing to read something like this. It breaks the norm of handing a kid an iPad or Xbox controller.

Plus hot chocolate and ice cream. At the end they learned the improved clinch knot.

My brother and sister in law started their kids shooting and cleaning guns at ages 7 to 9. In 2019 at, I think, 16 to 19 they all got their own ARs for Christmas. But my brother made them get parts and build their own. They each picked out the parts they wanted so they are not all the same.

You are laying a great foundation there for a bunch of little Dons that will grow up to collect and restore old reels, and maintain their new ones as well.
