What did you Catch Today?

Nuts & Bolts Guy
I hit up Blue Marsh today and caught nothing! But I’m not disappointed about it. My main goal today was to see if I could find fish staging for pre-spawn at predicted areas.

I had 3 spots that I was extremely confident in and they did not disappoint, fish were there, the one spot, even more fish than I expected. I threw everything at them, Crankbait, Jerkbait, Chatterbait, swim jig, jig, Senko and even that new “spring” worm I bought a month or so ago and not a sniff. That however did not surprise me, water temp. was 43 degrees with some backs of creeks in the upper 40s.

I’m thinking 2-3 weeks yet and the bite should start to turn on there and things could get really fun a couple weeks after that.

We told the boat charter we didn’t want to keep any but the way the trebles on the spoons set it’s a keep all legal deal. They also had clients right after even though we’d booked most of the day. I’m guessing it’s a fish to your limit thing and the hours you pay are just to offset weather if limiting is your concern. The Capt lost steering and Autopilot pretty much immediately and was good enough to run planers while steering using the two motors. They worked hard to keep us fishing. Thankfully my uncle owns a big boat and could drive when needed while I wasn’t afraid to jump in and spend an hour untangling a planer winch. No point in grumbling or sitting idle just help where you can and roll on. Not like the guys running the boat wanted to have the issues.

A couple take aways, I’ll be hiring A-5’s friend for a float trip. He was super helpful even though he wasn’t in NY at the time. He even texted each night until 11pm for updates on our progress and advice on what to use where to go. I’d also book the Lake Charter 8 hrs and be clear on releasing well in advance. I’m glad they could scramble to get another boat ready so early season to help us without much notice. I’d plan the next one months in advance. We had to pivot when waters where to hard to fish and not many fish hitting in the river.

A-5 needs props for the wader recommendation. I noticed I could easily wade where everyone struggled with the boots after switching soles from rubber to studded felt. The compass waders did great. Feet got a little cold the first day and I struggled to use gravel guards that didn’t stretch enough for boots. I had neoprene divers socks I put outside wading booties and rolled over the boots to hold tight so gravel guards mostly fit over. Kept feet nice and warm too.

Only regret was not asking A-5’s advice until afterI bought boots. I heard bad on BOA lacing. The drawstrings on mine wouldn’t stay tight and I’ll be buying BOAs for them. I could spent $20 more on DarkHorse boots with BOA laces and been way better off with their taller boot/ankle support design as well.

My brother’s almost never used Hodgemans leaked bad and his cheap wading shoes where treacherous so I might buy a pair of Waders with Zippers and Dark Horse Korkers then loan him my current set, lol. Good Samaritan and all.

Great photos. Looks like somebody had to glue some spots on their neoprenes. Would you prefer being in the boat or in waders?

Glad you got some on the boat my buddies went up and as for now only caught one. The weather up there is crazy.
Yeah it can be wild. When we went up in '19 we got bounced around like crazy, and only caught one. Day before and day after were perfectly calm.

Looks like some good fishing Grem. Thanks for sharing.

As for charter fishing they all do something different it’s who you go out with. I found one that went out all day and the guy did basically what you wanted. To bad I couldn’t find someone to pitch in with me.

Just have to ask, I’m down for it again, whenever, I borderline dislike my job anyway and love to fish, easy priority there.

Reminds me of the post I had on old site. Let’s get a trip to go for Mahi and Tuna or OBX Marlin In Sept. I’ll float a large portion and just want to be on the boat so no reel time needed here. I like being around others that like to fish and trips like I just took I prefer being ttr guy that doesn’t catch or takes the little guys. I’ve just as much fun watching others haul them in. If anyone wants to really go in I’d love Marlin near Cube a la old man and the sea but Sept in OBX has some monster Marlin migrating through, let’s fish

Would love to go in on something like this, but September is pretty shaky for me schedule wise. I have 2 weekends off but one is the wife's birthday. We think the other full timer at my full time job is getting fired, an I may be working 4 12 hours shifts a week instead of 3. My 4 day weekends may be going away. So I will only have the weekend of the 24th and 25th, and I don't know if I would have to cut out Sunday to come home and work Monday.

i burned all my vacation and sick time on covid, so I am not sure how much I'll have built back up by then. I have days off during the week, but I am guessing that won't work for others.
