Trout Derby 2021

Kept this one for my brother on law and to put it out of his misery. People just wouldn't give him a break. Up and down the bank cast after cast. Gold in a hole just makes it crazy. I wish they would all get caught the first day so the gold diggers would go away lol.

In my humble opinion, very very humble, seasoned with years and years of experience with Steelhead I must say that you are "overhooked". I feel there is no need for a thick hook if you aren't also matching it with an equivalently rated line. If you're using only 6 lb line (braid excluded) then almost any standard hook should do as the line will break long before any standard hook would bend open. Tell me I'm wrong......
By the way I used to Bluefish and used 25 lb test on thick octopus circle hooks in size 6. I sometimes used the improved clinch but not always.
I love the Palomar for big lures.

Grem, let the testing begin!

(drum role please.)

Um not true don. We us 6lb test to land 10-15lb steelhead. 6lb won’t cinch on the hook well. So a improved knot locks it in place. I’ve done pull test and have studied profusely. And blue label is as thin as it gets with a actual 6lb breaking point. Others are either thicker or trash.

By the way. Steelhead out weigh bluefish by 10-15lb. You are using 25lb test. 20lb fish on 6lb blue label is a way different game. The Smallies up there are the size of blues down here

Oh man, typical, I stand corrected again. Improved clinch it is. Someday I'll be the pro, especially if I learn to listen. Why do you use such lite line? are they leader shy?

Very interesting.

Huh, Thats revealing. What size/type of hook.
Are Smallies around when you go after the Steelhead? They sound like a blast.

If its a whole box of hooks do you refer as Octopii?
I like that Bass. Size 8 is all the bigger you go for Steelies.

will get to it next week, have about every hook known to man and a ton of lines.... just gotta put some more distance between myself, Josey, and MB3 in this tourney. Been asleep at the wheel but only had 4-5 days out. Time to get serious now that I’m back in PA. It’s 1:36 AM so have 5 hours to daylight to plan my next move. As A-5 says, Bahahahaha!

Gremcat I might have to get serious and start taking pictures. There are two guys in their eighties who want trout to eat so I have to bring some home. Makes it easier to take pictures when don't have to worry about the fish

Yes you sound like one of my kids who is in medical devices. a former drummer w/adhd he constantly fiddles. As time passed his fiddling became valuable to numerous med co's.

If we are lucky we are taking the boat out tomorrow for the first time this year. Between week day over time, department over time and mandatory Sat once a month I'm finding it difficult to fish like I did. Especially with projects around the new house. What I lacked in talent I made up for in effort. Now I'm screwed lol

For those Blues up to 18 lbs and Stripers to 30+ lbs I swear by Sufix Siege 20lb mono. It has never failed me. Dull hook points on Blues has. That ~44 " Musky I caught on the yak was 10lb Sufix mono. It mowed down under water weeds and with the right drag just doesn't fail. I know nothing about Steelhead other than I haven't been. This was mostly an unsolicited promo for Sufix mono lol
